Front Desk Clerk
The funky and fantastic Ocean Island Backpacker's Inn seeks an extraordinary individual to become our full-time Front Desk Clerk.

Job Description:

  • Register arriving guests and assign rooms
  • Process group arrivals and departures
  • Take, cancel and change room reservations
  • Process telephone calls
  • Provide information on hotel facilities and services
  • Provide general information about points of interest in the area
  • Provide information about and resolve complaints and claims
  • Exchange foreign currency
  • Process guests' departures, calculate charges and receive payments
  • Balance cash and complete balance sheets, cash reports and related forms
  • Customer service oriented
  • Follow emergency and safety procedures
  • Work with minimal supervision
  • Clerical duties (i.e. faxing, filing, photocopying)
  • Keyboarding

Qualifications & Qualities:

  • Minimum 1 year's experience in the hospitality industry
  • Must be available to work weekdays and weekends, and able to commit to at least 8 months continuous employment (staff needed during Olympics).

 

Suites Cleaner / Laundry Superstar
The funky and fantastic Ocean Island Backpacker's Inn seeks an extraordinary individual to become our part-time/full-time Suites Cleaner/Laundry Superstar.

Job Description:

  • Ensuring the overall cleanliness and order of the Ocean Island’s 2nd location near downtown Victoria, liaising with front desk, maintenance staff and other supervisors. Helping with the laundry at the hostel. Shifts are somewhat flexible.
  • Every day at the hostel is different — it is a social place with guests from all over the world and great staff and every day is casual Friday at Ocean Island. We also offer hospitality industry discounts and freebies in Victoria and at other hostels in North America.

Qualifications & Qualities:

  • Experience in housekeeping and the hostel/hotel/hospitality industry is an asset but not essential;
  • We are open to people on temporary work visas and we can provide discounted accommodations for our staff, especially from October to May.

Global Eats Maestro

The funky and fantastic Ocean Island Backpacker's Inn seeks a global eats maestro to help us fulfill our mission to serve up fresh international fare and drinks to locals and travelers at the city’s best prices, in our cozy Café / Lounge / Music Venue.

Job description:

  • Preparing and serving food in a fast-paced environment; and possibly assisting with ordering, purchasing, storage and tracking of stock; costing; menu.
  • Position may also involve some bartending.
  • Position is full-time, long term and permanent, and shifts are afternoons, evenings and nights.
  • Compensation depends on experience and includes share of tips.

    The funky and fantastic Ocean Island Backpacker's Inn seeks Night Owls who enjoy meeting and working with travellers from all four corners of the galaxy.


    Job Description:

    • As an Ocean Island Night Owl, you are working in a dynamic environment and involved in a variety of different responsibilities. Some of these responsibilities may include: making reservations, checking guests in and out, providing travel information, working with maintenance and housekeeping staff and most importantly, providing a safe, clean, friendly and fun environment for our global travellers.
    • Part time and full time positions are available. The positions are long term and not subject to layoffs. Each shift is almost 10 hours (10pm to 7:30am) so a full-time position is 4 nights on with a 3 day weekend.
    • Every day at the hostel is different — it is a social place with guests from all over the world, great staff and every day is casual Friday at Ocean Island. We also offer hospitality industry discounts and freebies in Victoria and at other hostels in North America.

    Qualifications & Qualities:

    • Qualifications for this position are: experience in the service industry essential; experience in the hostel/hotel/hospitality industry and night shift experience a plus, but not necessary.

    Job Description:

    • As an “Ocean Island Superstar” you are working in a dynamic environment and involved in a variety of different responsibilities. The position is mostly front desk related work with some volunteer coordinating / housekeeping supervising. At Ocean Island we strive to make the most of each staff member’s unique talents to enable them to do varied work and advance.
      • The front desk responsibilities include: making reservations, checking guests in and out, providing travel information, working with maintenance and housekeeping staff and most importantly, providing a safe, clean, friendly and fun environment for our global travellers.
      • The volunteer coordinating / housekeeping supervising responsibilities include: coordinating and training international volunteers for housekeeping work, liaising with front desk, maintenance staff and other supervisors to ensure the overall cleanliness and order of the inn and its 2nd location.
    • Part-time and full-time positions are available. The positions are long term and not subject to layoffs. The shifts are 7-3.15pm, 2.30-10.45pm and 9-5.30pm.

    Job Description
    :

    • Hiring, training and managing international volunteers for housekeeping work. Ensuring the overall cleanliness and order of the inn and its 2nd location, liaising with front desk, maintenance staff and other supervisors to effectively manage the housekeeping department. At Ocean Island we strive to utilize each staff member’s unique talents to enable them to do varied work and advance.
    • Position is full-time and long term and shifts are 9-5:30pm five days a week.

    Job Description:

    • Permanent, full-time, weekday, weekend
    • Sweep, mop and wash floors
    • Dust furniture, vacuum carpeting, area rugs and upholstered furniture
    • Make beds and change sheets
    • Distribute clean towels and toiletries
    • Stock linen closet
    • Clean, disinfect and polish kitchen fixtures and appliances
    • Clean and disinfect bathrooms and fixtures
    • Handle and report lost and found items
    • Attend to guests' requests for extra supplies or other items
    • Provide basic information on facilities
    • Handle complaints
    • Pick up debris and empty trash containers
    • Wash windows, walls and ceilings
    • Clean bathrooms and showers

    Qualifications & Qualities:

    • Minimum 1 year's experience in the hospitality industry
