Hey Pema:

I spent one night at Ocean Island in summer '03, and it will not be my only time. I found the folks on staff to be very helpful, and the location to be very cool.

I was in the midst of a road trip that began in Atlanta, GA, USA and which had its turn around point in Skagway, Alaska, USA. I crossed through Alabama into New Orleans, LA then on to the NASA facility in Houston, TX. Next stop was Roswell, New Mexico [no aliens sighted] and on to the Grand Canyon, and to Ft. Huachuca to research the great African American Buffalo Soldiers. After a short foray into Mexico at Nogales, and further travel through Tucson and rural Arizona, I skipped back to Mexcio for a minute at Baja California, then crashed in San Diego at a hostel two blocks from the beach.

The views of the California coast were unforgettable all the way north along Route 1 and the 101. Hostels and camping along the water—most notably Pigeon Point Lighthouse Hostel near San Simeon, CA,—led into L.A. and on to the Green Tortoise in San Francisco. From there, it was on to the Redwoods of California, Eugene, Oregon and finally Port Angeles.

That's where I took a ferry to Vancouver Island. After having my car thoroughly searched at the border on the Island, my turtle, O.Kassa, and I arrived at Ocean Island. O. Kassa chilled in the car, but I really dug the place.

I had a chance to check out the town a bit before heading further north. Indeed, I travelled up the entire island to Port Hardy and hung out in the area for a couple of days waiting for the ferry. I got to a few of the small towns in the area and took lots of pix of the float planes, the nature and the water.

From there, I left the car parked at the ferry lot and took the Canadian up to Prince Rupert where I spent the night at a hostel there before getting the Alaskan Ferry up the Inside Passage. After Skagway, it was back to Ketchikan, Alaska for a few days.

When I had to rush back to to Georgia for work, I reversed my steps and met some more cool folks along the way. Time did not permit an overnight again at Ocean Island, and that was a shame; however, the short time I'd spent there before made me familiar with the area.

After reaching the lower 48, it was all about a mad dash back across the States to Georgia, sleeping a few hours here and there at rest stops by the side of the road.

I made it back with practically hours to spare to begin pre-service for working with my Fourth Grade students at the school where I was to begin teaching. In a way, this is my "What I Did On My Summer Vacation" essay, and Ocean Island was a part of it.

Maybe I'll rent a car for a month again this summer and check you guys out again; or maybe I'll hop a plane this time. My Plan A for summer '04, however, is to fly into London and make my way south to the Meditteranean, cross into the Motherland and travel from Cairo, Egypt to Acrra, Ghana.

Keep me on your mailing list!

Thanks,
Jeremiah
