Finding short-term rentals in Victoria BC has become trickier over the past couple of years. Whether you're here for a work contract, a semester, a hospital stay with family, or a few weeks between homes, you need something furnished and flexible. I hear this question at our front desk almost every day, so here is what I tell people.
Why short-term rentals in Victoria got harder
In 2024, British Columbia brought in new rules that limit short-term vacation rentals in many cities, including Victoria. In most cases, short stays are now only allowed in a host's own home. The result: a lot fewer entire apartments available for a few weeks, and higher prices for the ones that are left.
So if you've been scrolling the usual vacation rental apps and wondering where all the listings went, that's why.
Who needs a furnished rental for a few weeks or months?
The people I meet looking for furnished rentals in Victoria are usually:
- Students arriving for a term at the University of Victoria, Camosun College or Royal Roads, or waiting for campus housing to open up.
- People relocating for work who need a base while they look for a long-term place.
- Anyone between homes, waiting for a lease to start, a renovation to finish or a sale to close.
- Contract and seasonal workers here for a set number of weeks.
What they all want is the same: a furnished room, a predictable cost, and no long lease.
What to look for in a furnished rental
Before you book anything for a few weeks or months, check:
- What's included: wifi, linens, kitchen access, laundry. These small things add up fast if they're extra.
- Location: a central spot saves you time and transport money every single day.
- Flexibility: can you stay longer if your plans change?
- Who you can talk to: having real people on site, not just a lockbox, makes a big difference when something comes up.
- Is it real? Never pay a deposit for a place you can't verify. Short-term rental scams are common in tight markets.

Making a short stay feel like home
A few tips from someone who has watched plenty of guests settle in:
- Get a BC Transit day pass for your first exploring days, then decide if a monthly pass makes sense. Check bctransit.com for current options.
- Rent or bring a bike. The Galloping Goose and Lochside trails make cycling the easiest way around.
- Cook in the shared kitchen. You'll save money and meet people from all over the world.
- Walk Dallas Road or Beacon Hill Park at sunset at least once a week. It never gets old.
