Victoria has a reputation for afternoon teas, whale watching, and hanging baskets of flowers. All fine things. But stick around long enough — or just ask the right people — and you'll find a completely different city running underneath all that.

What Makes a Real Dive Bar
Let's be clear: a "dive bar" in 2025 doesn't mean dangerous or gross (well, not always gross). It means unpretentious. Cash welcome. Nobody cares what you're wearing. The Fernwood Inn
The Fernwood neighbourhood is Victoria's artsiest pocket, and the Fernwood Inn is its living room. This is a proper neighbourhood pub — pool table, cheap pints, regulars who've been coming since the 90s, and a patio that somehow stays lively even when it's drizzling (and look, we get a lot of rain, won't lie). It's also the kind of place where open mic nights are actually good, because Fernwood has a disproportionate number of people who can actually play guitar. Take the 14 bus from downtown and you're there in about 15 minutes — the DayPASS is $6.00 if you're making multiple stops.
Hermann's Jazz Club & Dive Bar
This one's a Victoria institution. Hermann's on View Street has been running since 1972, which in Victoria bar years is basically ancient. During the day it's unassuming to the point of looking closed. At night it transforms into one of the best live jazz venues in the Pacific Northwest — no exaggeration. The vibe is dark, cramped, and excellent. Cover charges vary by the night and who's playing, but you won't be paying craft-cocktail prices for your drinks. The Empress Hotel Bar? Hard Pass. Try The Mint Instead.
The Mint on Douglas Street is the kind of bar that operates on its own logic. Cheap drinks, a genuinely eclectic crowd, and a layout that defies explanation. It's popular with the late-night crowd, the "one more drink" crowd, and the "I don't technically have plans tonight" crowd. Open late, zero pretension, exactly what it is.
Big Bad John's
Technically it's inside the Strathcona Hotel, but Big Bad John's deserves its own mention because it is, without question, the most Victoria thing that exists. The ceiling is covered in bras. The floor is peanut shells. It's been there since 1972. Country music plays. It is genuinely bizarre and completely committed to itself, and you should go at least once just to experience it. The Strathcona also has a rooftop bar if you need fresh air after.
A Few Practical Notes
Cash: A lot of these places technically take card now, but having cash makes life easier and the bartenders happier.
Hours: Bars in BC close at 2am. Last call is typically around 1:30am — don't say you weren't warned.
