Salt Spring Island

Salt Spring Island, the jewel of the Southern Gulf Islands, has large number of resident artists, sculptors and musicians. There's a popular summertime Village Market and numerous outdoor activities such as kayaking, hiking and mountain biking. It's natural beauty, laid-back lifestyle and arts community is reason enough to check this island out!

Things to do on Salt Spring Island

  • Ganges, cute harbor area and tons of places to eat. Check out all the local shops as well.
  • Saturday Market, lovely market with creative goods, baked yums and much more, only on Saturday's.
  • Mount Maxwell Provincial Park, you can hike or drive your way to the top of Mount Maxwell. The hike will take you through the forest area of the park all the way to the top in an hour. You will have great views of the other islands and mountains on top.

How to get to Salt Spring Island

By public transportation:
Total travelling time: Approximately 1hr & 30min
Cost: Bus $2.50 one way (exact change required), Ferry $12.60

  • Take the #70 or #72 to Swartz Bay from Douglas and Pandora and get off at the ferry terminal.
  • Get on the ferry to Fulford Harbor on Salt Spring Island.
  • Once you get off the ferry you can use the public transportation on Salt Spring island, make sure to have enough cash with you for bus fare.

By car:
Total travelling time: Approximately 1hr
Cost: $36.90

From the hostel, follow Blanshard Street away from town (going North). This turns into the Pat Bay highway and this terminates at Swartz Bay ferry terminal. From there you can catch the ferry to Fulford Harbor on Salt Spring island.

Accommodation:

There are plenty of places to stay on Salt Spring, however, there isn't too much in terms of budget accommodation, especially in summertime.

Camping:

  • Ruckly Provincial Park, located at the southern tip of Salt Spring and is a great seaside park with many nature trails and the cheapest camping on the island.
  • Ganges campground, offers 50 camping spots only a half km from Mobys Pub.
  • Garden Faire Gallery, Nursery & campground, 10 min walk via Mouat Park trails to downtown Ganges

Budget Accomodations:

  • Salt Spring Inn, an affordable and great inn with lovely owners, right in the middle of Ganges.
  • Seabreeze Inne, one of the cheaper hotels, a 10 min walk to downtown Ganges.
